By ferry from Holwerd
The Wagenborg ferry sails several times a day from Holwerd (Friesland) to Nes on Ameland. The regular crossing takes about 50 minutes — the perfect amount of time to start winding down into holiday mode. In the summer months, a fast ferry also runs, getting you to the island in about 20 minutes.
- Foot passengers: reservations are recommended.
- Cyclists: advance reservation is required, space on board is limited

Bringing a car or not?
Ameland isn't car-free, so you're welcome to bring your car (reservation required). Many guests leave it at the ferry terminal in Holwerd: secure car parks are available there (P1 and P2, a few euros a day; a free shuttle bus runs from P2 to the ferry). On the island itself, you'll get around easily by bus and bike.
How to get to Amelander Kaap
Our apartments are located at Amelander Kaap (Oosterhiemweg 1) on the western edge of Hollum, about 11 kilometers from the ferry dock in Nes.
- 🚗 Car: about a 15-minute drive, follow the signs toward Ballum/Hollum. Free parking on-site.
- 🚌 Bus: a public bus toward Ballum and Hollum is waiting at the ferry dock after every arrival. Get off at the Amelander Kaap stop, right by our apartments. Pay with a transit card or debit card.
- 🚲 Bike: bring your own bike on the ferry or rent one at the dock in Nes; about a 40-minute ride on flat cycle paths.
- 🚕 Taxi: a taxi rank is at the ferry dock; you'll be at the door within fifteen minutes. Book ahead during high season.
- 🚶 On foot: too far from the ferry dock (11 km), but it's about a 15-minute walk from the center of Hollum.
Good to know
- Check-in between 3:00 and 10:30 PM, check-out until 10:30 AM — arriving later? Just let us know
- Pack light: bed linen is provided, and you'll receive a towel package per person. The kitchen has the usual basic amenities for a self-catering stay. There are supermarkets in Hollum, about 1 km away — note that supermarkets on Ameland may have limited hours or be closed on Sundays, depending on the season
